Achilles tendonitis is one of the most common sports injuries. As this tendon is the thickest in the body, it is often subjected to stresses causing the nodule formation, degeneration, and inflammation that lead to weakening and internal disruption that is found in Achilles tendonitis. Manual therapy for most forms of Achilles tendonitis should include reduction of adhesions and thickening of the tendon sheath. Willam Weintraub's Tendon and Ligament Healing presents hands-on therapy techniques to normalize the tendon tissue abnormalities and internal disorganization of chronic Achilles tendonitis. Recent research shows eccentric exercise programs to be successful for recovery from Achilles tendonitis. The book contains a heel lowering exercise strategy that has helped runners to strengthen both muscle and tendon in reversing their Achilles tendonitis injuries. The book's research section has Scandinavian research showing effective treatment of tendon injuries using eccentric (lengthening) contraction in an overall program. A combination of the author's osteopathic therapy techniques with a moderate exercise program produces good results for rehabilitating serious, chronic cases of Achilles tendonitis. Weintraub has developed innovative techniques of directly improving the microstructure of tendons and ligaments, as well as the surrounding joints and connective tissue.
