Ankle sprain is the most common ligament injury. A frequent sports injury, lateral ankle sprain involves damage to the ligaments on the outside part of the ankle. In chronic ankle sprain the ligaments exhibit laxity and weakness. The ligament fibers are disorganized and misaligned, particularly when the ankle sprain involves much of a tear. Waste product accumulation, congestion and adhesions are found in the ligement with an ankle sprain. While common in all sports, ankle sprain is most likely in sports using a lot of jumping and quick side-to-side motion. Basketball, tennis, and volleyball often result in ankle sprain. Fixations of the ankle, sub-talar and cuboid joints will accompany most ankle sprains. Rehabilitation of the ankle sprain should include strengthening of the peroneal muscles and improving the balance mechanism connected to the injury area. Tendon and Ligament Healing contains an account of recovery of the ligaments in an ankle sprain. . Related topics:
